11 Most Valued Skills for Oil and Gas Professionals

As of January 1, 2020, The New Guyana School has received approval by the National Accreditation Council to offer our year long Certificate in Fundamentals of Petroleum Technology. We developed this program in response to the emerging oil and gas sector in Guyana. This program is delivered over one year and provides knowledge in various aspects of the petroleum industry from the origins of the oil droplet, to how it is found, extracted, stored, transported and processed so it ends up in our homes. Industry professionals Possessing the right mix of skills and experience is very important to employers in this industry.

According to a study by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) sponsored by BP – British oil giant, there have been 11 most valued skills for professionals in the petroleum industry. The results came from 773 oil and gas professionals in 24 countries. They are as follows:

  • 4. Work ethic (58%)
  •  5. Technical skills (57%) 
  • 6. Knowledge (53%) 
  • 7. Analytical skills (53%)

  • 9. Flexibility (41%) 
  • 10. Computer skills (34%) 
  • 11. Writing skills (26%)

As you can see, the value of soft skills can’t be understated. As revealed by the study, soft skills are considered equally important as technical skills in developing a career in oil and gas industry. Topping the list of important skills for oil and gas workers was the ability to learn.
